4 May 2018 – First unveiled in January 2018, the G-SHOCK Celestial Guardian series features reinterpretations of the Four Symbols by acclaimed artist and graphic designer JAHAN LOH, with a specific colourway for each of the four respective watches to match different wardrobes and styles. The final watch in the series, the GA-800CG-1A, features the Black Turtle.
In traditional Chinese culture, the Four Symbols are celestial beasts that each correspond to a specific season, cardinal point, and quadrant of the sky. The Azure Dragon, Vermillion Bird, White Tiger, and Black Turtle didn’t just represent a system of organising and understanding the world, but were also guardians that kept the world in order.
With help from JAHAN LOH, CASIO has put a twist on these beasts by transposing them to the wrist. To modernise these traditional motifs and keep their influence subtle, JAHAN created a backdrop of clouds that are reminiscent of camouflage patterns all over each watch, before hiding the celestial guardians in plain sight. In this watch, a silhouette of the Black Turtle in its typical representation – a turtle entwined with a snake – is repeated several times on the strap. Only someone who is looking for it will recognise it though, making it a secret among those who are in the know.
The GA-800CG-1A will be released at the end of May at G-FACTORY outlets island-wide (except IMM); it’s pricing will be announced closer to launch.
