Tokyo, January 10, 2018 — Like clockwork, the countdown to the G-SHOCK’s 35th anniversary in April 2018 continues with yet another commemorative collection’s release. The latest limited edition timepieces to drop are two watches jointly designed by NIGO®, music producer and creator of urban clothing line A BATHING APE, and Kikuo Ibe, the father of the G-SHOCK.

Each 35th anniversary collection highlights a specific facet of the G-Shock, and the NIGO® X Kikuo Ibe line is no different. This time, the watches hark back to the fluorescent adolescent years of street fashion in the eighties and nineties, when the G-SHOCK was fast becoming a fashion icon in the United States, Japan, and elsewhere all around the world. There was – and still is – a certain romance to the neon clothing and accessories of the period, which the new watches have captured with their bright, vividly saturated cases.

Aesthetics aside, the timepieces also express the G-SHOCK’s philosophy of “Absolute Toughness” with a resin colouring/manufacturing process that’s new to the G-SHOCK. To prevent any colour degradation in their cases and straps, the respective components are first coloured with fluorescent paint, before two additional layers of clear plastic are applied over them. The finishing touch is a final coat of transparent UV-resistant paint that completes the translucent neon look.

The NIGO® X Kikuo Ibe collection consists of just two models – the DW-5635 is based on the DW-5600, the cornerstone of the G-SHOCK family, while the DW-6935 is adapted from the DW-6900, a popular platform for collaboration models that NIGO® is particularly fond of. Each timepiece will retail for US$135, and just 35 pieces of each model will be made available. CASIO is selling the watches via an unprecedented raffle system: from 0300hrs UTC on 1 February 2018 to 1459hrs UTC on 5 March 2018, interested buyers can register their interest on the special website. A raffle will be held later in March to select the successful buyers. To top things off, Kikuo Ibe will personally hand deliver a watch to one lucky buyer, wherever in the world they may be, for a unique experience that will surely live forever in their memory.

About Kikuo Ibe

Born in 1952, Kikuo Ibe earned a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the Faculty of Science and Technology of Sophia University in 1976, before joining CASIO. Initially assigned to the Design Department, Ibe was involved in digital watch construction development. In 1981, he proposed a rugged watch that would not break even if dropped and began developing a shock-resistant timepiece. After two years, the first G-SHOCK was released. Ibe later oversaw product planning for the MR-G series of G-SHOCK watches with a metal exterior, and the OCEANUS line of full metal watches equipped with radio-controlled, solar-powered systems. While continuing to be active in watch development, Ibe also participates in G-SHOCK events around the world as the father of G-SHOCK, working to expand the global reach of the brand.
