Casio to Release Color Graphic Scientific Calculator with 3D Graphing

TOKYO, March 21, 2017 — Casio Computer Co., Ltd., announced today the release of the fx-CG50, the latest addition to its line of graphic scientific calculators. The fx-CG50 is equipped with a high-resolution (82,944 pixel) color LCD, and in addition to 2D graphing, offers 3D graphing capabilities. The new calculator helps users to learn the relationship between formulas and objects such as basic 3D shapes.

Casio released the fx-7000G in 1985, the world’s first graphic scientific calculator that generates graphs from various mathematical functions. In 2010, Casio released the fx-CG20, a color graphic scientific calculator with Picture Plot, which creates function graphs overlaid on color images. Through products such as these, Casio has developed advanced calculators that support math education in the classroom.

The new fx-CG50 retains the popular features of the fx-CG20 including diverse color graphing capabilities and Picture Plot, while adding 3D graphing capability. The 3D graphing capability includes built-in formulas for spheres, cylinders, planes and lines. The user can draw these shapes from any viewpoint by entering a numerical value in a formula.*

The fx-CG50 is ergonomically designed with a curved back case that molds to the hand. The front case is imprinted with a sophisticated geometric pattern as a symbol befitting a scientific calculator. The geometric pattern has a special finish that gives the pattern a different look depending on the viewing angle. The high-resolution color LCD is perfect for viewing, and beneath it are function keys with a metal finish. The calculator offers both ease-of-use and an appealing, sophisticated design. The new fx-CG50 has been approved by the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme (DP).

Main Features

Graphing functions highlighting the high-resolution color LCD

The high-resolution color LCD has an 82,944-pixel resolution capable of displaying 65,536 colors, with high-resolution fonts up to 18x24 pixels (including blank pixels). This enables graphs, equations, and text to be displayed in textbook-like quality. In addition to drawing line, pie, and bar graphs in color, grid lines on graphs as well as tracing coordinates are displayed in color.

3D graphing including cross-sections of dimensional objects

The 3D graphing capability includes built-in formulas for spheres, cylinders, planes and lines. The fx-CG50 can draw from any viewpoint and display up to three overlaid objects. 3D objects can be manipulated by changing the values, so that users can observe the changes that occur from adjusting the size of spheres or the height and diameter of cylinders. The 3D graphing capability includes cross-sections of spheres, cylinders, planes and lines.

Picture Plot intersects math with real objects

Picture Plot enables users to create their own graphs over photographs displayed on the color LCD. The fx-CG50 comes with 50 types of color photographs that users can create graphs over, such as a picture of the parabola of jets from a water fountain and an image sequence of a clock’s pendulum movement. Users can perform regression calculations from the completed graphs to enhance their understanding of math functions.

Color Link enables color coding of values and corresponding graph components

Color Link helps users to visualize trends and changes in data, by color coding specified values on the spreadsheet screen and the corresponding graph components. Multiple brackets can also be automatically color-coded when entering equations, to facilitate input of complex equations on the screen.
